NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University senior running back John Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) has been named a preseason All-American by www.d2proday.com. A two-time All-Conference performer and the 2008 Northeast-10 Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Wiechman is looking to assemble an outstanding senior season for the Owls this fall. He was selected as a Second-Team All-American by the organization.
A year removed from Northeast-10 Offensive Player of the Year laurels, Wiechman proved a selfless, versatile threat for the Owls out of the backfield in 2009. He saw time at both tailback and fullback and thrived both as a receiver and a rusher. Wiechman ranked eighth in the league in rushing and added seven touchdowns (five rushing, two receiving) on the year.
As a sophomore, Wiechman was also named All-ECAC and All-Region after rushing for more than 1,000 yards on the year.
Southern Connecticut opens the 2010 season on Sept. 4 with a road game against Indiana (Pa.) at 4 p.m.
SportingNewsCT.com will be the broadcast home all season long for Owl football.
