NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University will recognize the efforts of its 1949, 1950 and 1951 football teams – then of New Haven State Teachers College – during the annual Homecoming weekend on Oct. 16. Members of the squad, which set national records for total defense in each of the three seasons, will be honored by University President Dr. Stanley Battle at the Homecoming Breakfast, as well as at halftime of the Owls’ game against Bentley.
The teams’ marks stood for nearly 25 years and remain program records to this day. The Owls were the only program to hold their opponents to less than 100 yards per game for three consecutive seasons (84.3 yards per game in 1951, 95.6 yards in 1949 and 93.6 yards in 1950). During that stretch, the team won 20 of 23 games, shut out its opponents 14 times and allowed just 91 points.
