Southern Connecticut Edged By New Haven, 23-22
WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University junior running back Rashaad Slowley (New Rochelle, N.Y.) finished with 160 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, but the Owls were edged by New Haven on Saturday, 23-22.
The Owls are now 3-3, 3-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play. New Haven is 5-1, 3-1.
New Haven took the opening kickoff and scored a touchdown to jump out to an early 7-0 lead.
However, SCSU quickly answered with a six-play, 35-yard drive to tie the game. Quarterback Kevin Lynch (Medfield, Mass.) hit tight end Nick Mandich (Miami, Fla.) on a five-yard scoring reception. Christopher Hazelton (Bristol, Conn.) added the PAT to even the game at 7-7.
The Chargers went back in front with a score on their next possession, but Hazelton connected on field goals of 22 and 37 yards to cut the lead to 14-13. New Haven added a late first half field goal of its own to make it 17-13 at halftime.
The Owls outscored the Chargers by a 9-0 mark in the third quarter to take a 22-17 lead after 45 minutes. Slowley scored from 11 yards out to put SCSU in front at 19-17. The PAT was missed.
Hazelton’s third field goal of the day, from 24 yards out, extended the lead to five points.
New Haven scored the only points of the fourth quarter on a touchdown with 12:43 remaining to provide the margin of the difference in the win.
Lynch finished 13-of-26 for 203 yards. Andre Privott (Middletown, Conn.) had five catches for 91 yards. Willie Epps (Norwalk, Conn.) added three catches for 50 yards.
The Owls are back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Bentley in the annual Homecoming contest.
