NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University gymnastics coach Jerry Nelson has announced that seniors Justine Basley (Danielson, Conn.), Samantha Laraway (Watervliet, N.Y.) and junior Arianna Mallardi (Norwalk, Conn.) have been named team captains for the 2011 season.
Basley is coming off a season in which she collected All-America honors for the second straight year at the USAG Collegiate Nationals. She finished sixth on the bars at last year’s competition. Previously, Basley earned All-America honors on the beam as a sophomore. She is also a two-time ECAC champion on the bars and has also claimed ECAC individual titles in the All-Around and beam.
Laraway, who qualified for the 2010 USAG Collegiate Nationals on the floor exercise, has emerged as one of the squad’s top performers in that event. She has also excelled in the classroom throughout her career. Laraway is a two-time USAG Academic All-American and also earned NACGC/W Scholar-Athlete honors this past year.
Mallardi has been a contributor on the bars, beam and floor for the Owls throughout her career. She also has thrived academically, as evidenced by USAG Academic All-America laurels during the 2009 season.
The Owls open the 2011 season on Jan. 15 with a meet at West Chester with Springfield and Ursinus.
