June 8, 2010 -Middletown – Notre Dame starting pitcher Gary Flowers ’12 was simply masterful. And as a result, the Green Knight baseball team defeated top-seed East Lyme 5-0 and will play felow SCC school Sheehan this weekend for the Class L championship.
This weekend’s championship game can be heard with an audio webcast on GoGreenKnights.com.
Flowers allowed only one-hit, a controversial infield single to Caleb Gulovsen in the fifth inning. He was mixing his pitches and hitting his spots to perfection. His control was pinpoint as he struck out nine while only walking one batter.
The Green Knights, who will be playing for the fourth state championship in the 2009-10 academic year, got all the run support they would need in the first inning on a pair of two-out singles by Will Meade ’10 and David Beisler ’10 scoring Mike Panza, who singled, and Sean Goldrich, who reached on a fielder’s choice.
Notre Dame (19-6) then used a three-run fourth inning to give Flowers some cushion. After Meade struck out, Beisler and Brian Sibley ’10 singled and moved up on a wild pitch by East Lyme starter Eric Morse.
Chris Baglini ’11 drove home Beisler on a sacrifice fly to give Notre Dame a 3-0 lead. Mike Panza ’12 then delivered a two-out bloop single compounded by an East Lyme error that allowed pinch runner Kris Mathews and Matt Murray to score all to score all the way from first base.
Flowers, who pitched Notre Dame to wins over Wethersfield and Branford in the opening two rounds, took care of the rest for the complete-game win. He allowed only six base runners and only one East Lyme batter reached third base. He completed the one-hit gem getting Al Lloyd to fly out to center.
Notre Dame has already won the 2009 Class L football championship as well as the Class L indoor track title and this past Monday the track team won the CIAC State Open Meet during the 2009-2010 academic year.
